The Old Harbour Museum in the center of Hermanus is open for visitors 24 hours a day displaying ‘the old sea wall’, boats, brine tanks and bokkom stands and an indoor exhibition on whales provides interesting information on the southern right whales which visit here every year to calve.
At 12h00 we meet for lunch at the well-known Bientang’s Cave Restaurant (weather permitting) This cave is named after Bientang, the last known Khoi Strandloper to have lived in the cave at the turn of the 19th century. Situated in a traditional cave right at the ocean’s edge, it is known as one of the best land-based Whale-watching restaurant in the world.
After lunch we take the scenic coastal route to Franschhoek where you will spend your 3rd night in a 4Star hotel. This makes for some exhilarating driving and most of the driving is done at 60 kilometers an hour or less, gives drivers and their passengers plenty of opportunities to take in the gorgeous views.
En route we will visit the resident offshore African penguin colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty’s Bay, the Cape Overberg. It is home to one of the largest breeding colonies in the world. The boardwalk through the colony affords you to see the penguin close up and ample photographic opportunities for these comical flightless birds, without disturbing their daily activities. Caution needs to be taken as Penguins bite. No-touch rule applies as you will need a tetanus shot if bitten.
Betty’s Bay lies within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The first UNESCO declared Biosphere in South Africa and is fiercely protected by the town’s occupants. Also considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom due to the largely unspoilt and isolated area of exceptional examples of the fynbos.
